How Many Calories Do You Really Need?

In this age of weight loss there are many questions regarding calories and how Calories many you really need. There is no question that most of us have far too many in a day which is leading to our obesity rate being one of the highest in the world. How many calories you actually need depend on whether you are male or female, how old you are, what kind of physical activity you do, as well as how much weight you want to lose.

Consult a doctor - The first thing you should do is to consult a doctor. He or she can tell you what your ideal weight is and give you a good general idea of how many calories you should eat per day. You can also look on the Internet, but there is a lot of confusing information out there. The best way to determine how many calories you need is by weather you are losing or gaining weight. There are guidelines however which you find in your doctors office or at a reputable website. What you do with the calories is what will be discussed here.

Eat between 1500 to 2000 calories - Most people that are trying to lose weight should stay between 1500 and 2000 depending on their sex and activity level. If you go over this amount one day a week, it is nothing to be hugely concerned about. However, you want to try to stay within your guidelines if you are looking for weight loss. You certainly do not want to go over this amount frequently because then you will start to gain weight which can lead to many diseases including Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, and even certain types of cancer.

Use common sense - You need to use your common sense for the most part. If you are eating out everyday and not knowing how many calories you are consuming then this could be a problem.  However if you healthy all week and then head out to dinner one night then splurging a little won’t do much harm, it is only when you are splurging everyday that your body will start showing the effects of that.

Eat healthy foods - The calories you eat should consist of healthy foods such as lean meats, low-fat dairy, protein, vegetables, fruits, and other healthy foods. Eating all fruits is just as bad as eating all fats, so by knowing what you are putting into your body is already going to help you when it comes to knowing if you are eating enough or too much. A little fat everyday is necessary as well.  The fats should not come from candy or sweets; they should come from unsaturated fats which help to keep your heart healthy. The more saturated fats you eat the fatter you will become and it could take away years from your life.

Do exercise regulary - Exercise also burns off calories which are important if you are losing weight. If you want to maintain it you should still be exercising but make sure you add calories to your meals to offset what you are burning off. Again, the best place to start is with your family doctor who knows you the best. The last bit of advice is to never drop below 1200 calories which can cause undue stress to your body and you won’t be able to maintain your energy level. Too few calories are just as bad as too many.
